3 revolutionary steps to experiencing the power of now

the power of now

“As soon as you honor the present moment, all unhappiness and struggle dissolve, and life begins to flow with joy and ease. When you act out the present-moment awareness, whatever you do becomes imbued with a sense of quality, care, and love – even the most simple action.”

Eckhart Tolle,The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment

Do you know how to live in the present moment? Wise ones throughout the ages and from all cultures have spoken to us about the power of living in the present moment but most of us find it difficult to achieve.

This is the type of thinking that means that you are not fully living in the present:
“I will be happy when I get that job promotion…”
“If only my husband hadn’t had an affair my life would have been so much better…”
“When I’ve lost weight I’ll really start living…”

All of these statements are examples of people living either in the past or for the future. The trick to accessing real power is to find out how to live fully right now, no matter what your present circumstances or past history.

1. Experiencing the power of now through meditation

Living in the now leads to a powerful sense of freedom. Many people have discovered that the practice of meditation can be a very helpful tool to learn to experience full awareness of the present moment.
A very simple form of meditation is simply to sit quietly and bring your attention to your breath. Continue to refocus your full attention to the process of your breathing – in and out, in and out…. If your mind wanders, don’t worry, but gently draw your attention back to your breathing. Sitting and giving your full engagement to the simple fact of your own breathing can give you a pure experience of the present moment.
Of course, meditation exists in many other forms as well and as you continue to practice meditation you will find that the relaxation you experience in this state will deepen and you will also gain deeper experience of the many benefits that meditation can bring to your life.

2. The joy of ‘flow’

‘Flow’ is the mental state of operation in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity (Wikipedia).

What causes flow is different for each of us – you might experience flow playing golf, making pottery, writing a poem or sewing. What is important is that you are completely absorbed in the activity. In flow you are truly experiencing the true power of now – you will be unaware of any other thoughts, or even emotion, but you will be experiencing a deep sense of joy and ‘oneness’. If you regularly are able to experience flow in your life you are likely to report that you have high levels of contentment and fulfillment in your life.

3. Letting go of your anxieties

As you learning to live in the power of now, you may discover that your anxieties begin to slip away. Anxiety is often tied to the future – what might happen, or the past – what has happened before. As you learn to experience life, just as it is, right now, you will find that you no longer have the need to hold on to your fears and anxieties. For some people, it can be hard to let these things go – a ritual is a very powerful way to help. Try this – write down all the things that you used to feel anxious or fearful about. For example, you may write – “in the past I worried about money, I felt anxious if I knew I had to speak in public, I was anxious about how I looked…. Now, I live in the power of now, I am letting all these fears go forever.”
When you are finished, choose a ritual that feels good to you – burn it, bury it, throw it in the ocean, or leave it in the garden for the snails to eat. Then celebrate! You are starting to really experience the revolutionary power of now in your life.
