Have you set a goal and want to make sure your reach it? Is it important to you to be a ‘success’?

Most people think of success as some huge, out of reach dream. They picture superstars and mega millionaires who’ve made it big. However, the actual definition of success is “the accomplishment of an aim or purpose.” So, it doesn’t matter who you are or how big or small your goal, once you reach it, you are by definition a success.

That being said, there’s nothing wrong with dreaming big. In fact, it’s encouraged because it’s the big dreamers who change the world. They’re the movers and shakers and if you can be one of them, more power to you.

So, how do you reach your goals and achieve your success? Just follow these four steps:

Step #1 – Clear your mind. Between obligations at home, at work and to the children, besides being barraged with too many media outlets to mention, it’s rare that you get time to sit in silence and just be.

Before you can do anything, you need to clear your mind of everything in it. Wipe all your worries and concerns away and start with a fresh, clean slate. The best way to do this is to meditate. When you focus only on your breathing, your mind relaxes and opens itself to creativity and energy. Your thoughts become clearer and your focus more crisp.

To try this, find a nice quiet place to sit that is free from distractions. Close your eyes and pay attention to your breaths as they enter and exit your body. Feel the air as it goes into your nose and travels into your lungs. Release the breath and feel it exit your body into the air around you.

If you’re new at this, you may find that your mind wanders away from your breathing very easily. That’s normal. When it happens, just return your focus on your breathing. The more you practice this, the easier you will find it to stay focused.

Step #2 – Define what success means to you. Once you have a clear mind, you need to decide what success is to you. What, specifically, would it mean to you to achieve your goal?

Sometimes people set goals and then are disappointed when they reach them because they don’t have the results they were searching for. That’s why it’s very important to be as specific as possible when you’re trying to figure out your definition of success.

The best way to do this is to picture yourself once you’ve reached your goal. How are you different then than you are now? For instance, if your goal is to lose weight and you picture your future self as someone who has more self-confidence or is more comfortable in group situations, these are the results you’re seeking. These are what you need to achieve to feel successful.

Step #3 – Create a personal mission statement in regard to the goal. Now that you know what you’re truly going for, try to condense it into one or two short, concise sentences that clearly define your intended results. This solidifies what you need to feel successful.

Most businesses and companies create a mission statement to help keep them focused and headed in the right direction. This is exactly what you’re doing for yourself. Let’s look at an example.

Say you set a goal to start your own business. When you break it down to what that specifically means to you, you decide it means early retirement so you can enjoy life, having the freedom to make your own decisions, being able to take vacations when you want, not having to answer to someone else and being able to work from home. You may shorten this into a mission statement like: My mission is to maintain maximum control over my schedule and financial security.

Now keep this statement handy to remind yourself what you want to do. And, before you make any major decisions, make sure that they support your statement and get you closer to it, instead of further away from it.

Success means different things to different people and, once you decide what it means to you, you’re one step closer to achieving it. Now that you know, go get it!
