It is often thought that the only sure fire way to deal with a full blown anxiety disorder is through medication. However you may be surprised to learn that there are changes that you can make to your lifestyle that can and will make a difference. So with this in mind, here are 5 ways to overcome anxiety without the dependence on medication.

Food intake

Believe it or not the role of food is absolutely vital in order to improve your overall mood and anxiety related issues. Not only is eating the right foods good for your health, it does a pretty good job of helping with your inner karma. Here are some food tips…

Ditch the processed packaged foods in favour of whole foods

Eating a balanced breakfast will help keep your blood sugar levels on an even keel reducing anxiety and stress.

Don’t skip meals! Try to eat 3 square healthy meals every day, snacking in between is okay, but try munching on healthy fruits and vegetables

Skip the caffeine – it’s a well known fact that caffeine can help to bring about anxiety attacks, so pass on the coffee in favour of herbal teas rich in antioxidants and chamomile which has a calming effect.

Look at your gluten intake – Gluten has been known to cause anxiety attacks so try a two week gluten free diet and see if it helps

Get out and about and exercise

One of the ways to overcome anxiety is through exercise. It is known to raise the serotonin levels which in turn makes you feel less worried and anxious. In addition to making you feel better, stronger and fitter, you also get natural vitamin D from being in the great outdoors which is also known to improve your mood and reduce levels of stress.

Meditation

When we meditate a lot of changes occur within. This isn’t solely on a spiritual level, but also physically as well. For example, when meditation takes place certain chemicals and endorphins are released into the body; in particular GABA which is a calming neurotransmitter and is known for it’s ability to stabilise mood disorders, including anxiety. When it’s released into the body GABA helps to lower stress levels and can instantly make you feel less overwhelmed. In addition to GABA, meditation also helps to boost levels of melatonin. This is a chemical used to aid restful sleep. On the flip side stress can dramatically reduce melatonin levels in the body, thus causing restless sleep patterns. Meditation helps to restore the balance of melatonin thus helping people to sleep more soundly and wake up in the morning feeling refreshed, relaxed, and most importantly calm.

Multi vitamins

Natural multi-vitamins are a great source of help in order to control anxiety, stress and worry. Vitamin B complex and amino acids such as tryptophan (which can be found naturally in warm milk) really do help to control anxiety.

Give yourself some ‘me’ time

We all live busy lives and sometimes it’s all too easy to be caught up in a never ending circle of work, work, and more work. So it really does pay to take some time out and give yourself some ‘me’ time. Simply by kicking back, relaxing and doing something that you love, can have a real positive effect on your mood and in turn your anxiety levels.

So there you have it, 5 ways to overcome anxiety naturally without taking medication… Each person has their own unique biochemistry and what triggers off anxiety in one person, doesn’t necessarily trigger it for someone else. The trick is to understand what it is that can affect you personally and more importantly what you can do to prevent an attack before it happens.
