7 Ways to Improve Your Mind’s Peak Performance

Mind Peak Performance

Your brain is like any other muscle in your body. It can be strong or it can be weak. If you want to improve it, you have to train it. The key is knowing how.

Luckily, it doesn’t take special skills or super feats to help your mind achieve levels of peak performance. All it takes, is basic math.

To boost your mental capacity, there are certain things you need to add to your life if they aren’t there already. They are:

Good nutrition. Your brain cannot function efficiently when you feed your body junk. Would your car run smoothly if you put dirt in the gasoline? No. Your body doesn’t either. So, boost its power by providing it all the necessary vitamins and nutrients it needs. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables, lean protein and complex carbohydrates.

Exercise. Get your body active. Not only does it help keep you healthy and strong, which promotes mental clarity, it also relieves stress and anxiety. With negative emotions on the sidelines, you can keep your mind in the game and focus on the task at hand.

Keep learning. Just because you’re out of school doesn’t mean that you should ever stop striving for knowledge. Read books. Watch documentaries. Learn about famous events and people. Learn a new skill. Feed your mind new information so that you’re continuously broadening your horizons.

Meditate. Take your mind to a whole new level by practicing the art of becoming one with your body. Like a filter, meditation removes the impurities that clog your mental capacity and allows you to receive clean, clear information and process it effectively and efficiently.

Just as knowing what to add to your life will help you achieve a mental edge, you also have to know what to subtract, or get rid of. They are:

Limit substances like alcohol and drugs. While it may seem like they stimulate your creativity or help you think outside the box, mentally altering your mind through chemicals isn’t going to enhance your performance. It’s going to hinder it. You can’t fully focus on things when your thinking is clouded by foreign substances. Keep your mind clear to be able to use it to its fullest capacity.

Limit TV time. Watching TV show after TV show or doing something completely mindless keeps your mind, well, mindless. It doesn’t stretch it and work it and make it stronger. It leaves it dull and lifeless. A 2009 study conducted by Jeffrey G. Johnson, PhD was published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine and stated that kids around the age of 14 that watch just one hour of TV a day or more were at increased risk of having lower grades and “long-term academic failure.” Want to boost your mind? Step away from the TV.

Gadgets that don’t make you think. GPS is great. It helps you never get lost. But, using gadgets like this that you rely on to do all your thinking doesn’t help your brain grow at all. The only way to boost your brain power is to continuously work. Don’t get me wrong, GPS is a great tool, but it’s just that – a tool. Something to help you, not do all the work for you.

Yes, achieving peak performance with your mind is as simple as knowing basic math. Add in the things that promote growth and subtract the things that inhibit it. Do this and you’ll multiply your brain power. How’s that for results?
