There’s an age old controversy over whether destiny is chosen. Do you have control over what will happen to you in the future, or is it already set in stone and there’s nothing you can do to change it?

While certain things do happen in life that are beyond anyone’s control, it’s overwhelmingly clear that you can choose which direction your life is headed. Sure, you may not be able to change certain circumstances, but your actions play a huge role in what happens in your world.

So, how do you choose your destiny? Just follow these four simple steps:

Be clear about what you want

In order to move toward a life you want, you have to know specifically what it is you’re after. What do you want most? What desire burns so deep inside you that it can take you from zero to excited in .2 seconds?

If you answered that question with an answer that involves wealth or obtaining a certain material object, look deeper. Sure, you may want those things, but what you really want is what they represent to you. For example, if you want wealth, is it because you don’t want to struggle financially to support your family or because you want an enjoyable retirement? What does it mean to you?

Not sure what you want? You’re not alone. It’s easy to spend so much time just trying to survive that you lose sight of what would make you feel complete. If you want help, try meditation. Allow all your fears and worries to escape your mind and leave it free to explore and release your inner most desires. Just be ready to listen when it speaks.

Be open to your destiny

You’re probably thinking, “Well, yeah. Why wouldn’t I be open to it?” But, it’s not enough to merely want something in your future. You have to be open to things that come your way that will take you there. Be willing to take roads that aren’t on the map.

Ever been in a situation where you’ve never heard of a town, for instance, but you happen to end up there at some point and now you hear about it all the time? It isn’t necessarily that you didn’t hear about it before. It’s just that you dismissed it because it had to meaning to you. So, if you put meaning into your destiny and keep open to it, you will notice more and more things that will get you closer to it.

Work hard to achieve it

Again, there are certain things in your future you have no control over, but you can work hard to keep going in the right direction. Pursue all the doors and hallways that may lead you to where you want to be.

Ever look at someone that seems to have it all? It’s like they’re always in the right place at the right time? Although it may appear to be that way outwardly, chances are good that if you talked to them, you’ll find that they took steps to put themselves where they needed to be in order for good things to happen.

So, don’t be afraid to roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty. You may not be able to see your final destination, but as long as you do things to get you closer to it, you will see it soon enough.

Don’t ever quit

This is probably the biggest step that most people don’t take. They get close to their dream, their destiny, and they give up because it feels too hard.

Think of all the great things we have because people didn’t give up. Edison knew it was his destiny to create the light bulb. It took him one-thousand tries, but he never stopped. What if he had? What if he had given up on try number 999?
