If you doubt the astounding power of our minds, then you only have to look around you: we have transformed the world in which we live and even reached the moon and (vicariously, through the robots we have created), the nearby planet Mars. But while we are mentally powerful in the first place, our daily modern lives seem to conspire to dull it: from the hectic schedules we operate on to the mentally harmful things we engage in, it is no wonder then that many people feel that they are able to use merely a fraction of the entire potential of their mind. 1. Eat healthy
Any discussion regarding how to improve your mind power starts with this fundamental fact: nutrition, specifically, the kind of nutrients that benefit the brain. The foods we eat have the biggest impact on how our brain works—the brain, as a major organ, consumes more than one-fifth of the food and oxygen we take in every single day. Think about that for a moment: of the organs in the human body, the brain takes the lion’s share of all the nutrients we consume. It’s an indication of its place in the grand scheme of things, physiologically speaking. You can help your brain and sharpen your mind by eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Taking fish oil supplements (omega 3) can also help a lot.
2. Avoid taking substances that can mentally alter you
Telling you to stop drinking coffee might be the most rejected “how to improve your mind power” suggestion, but we can’t change the fact that caffeine can exhaust the mind by artificially pushing it up to certain heights of awareness, only to leave it falling down when supply stops. Likewise, too much sugar, or drinking alcohol and caffeine, not to mention any of the drugs designed to alter your consciousness, can get in the way of the mind’s or brain’s proficient functioning.
3. Meditate daily
Scientific researchers have recently found, through a number of rigorously performed studies, the existence of what is called neuroplasticity—the fact that our brains can change for the better or worse. Another startling discovery is that regular meditation can significantly improve the brain’s neuroplasticity—think of the brain as a muscle that becomes “muscular” the more you lift weights or exercise.
