how to improve self worth

Do you feel down about yourself and wish more than anything that you had the confidence to be the person you want to be? Are you constantly telling yourself you’re not good enough, smart enough, rich enough and more?

Life is hard enough to navigate under normal circumstances. But, it’s even harder when you continuously tell yourself that you don’t measure up.

The funny, or not so funny, thing about self-worth is that even though it’s what you think about your ‘self’, the majority of what you believe is influenced by external factors. In other words, it comes from outside sources.

For instance, maybe someone said something either to you or about you that was pretty negative. If you don’t shake it off, you can internalize it and start to believe it’s true. Now their opinion has become your opinion, even if it’s completely wrong.

So, how do you build a strong, positive self-worth from the inside out? Here are five simple strategies:

  • Make a list of your positive qualities. Come up with all the things about you that are great. Highlight all of your strengths. Don’t forget to include all the things that others have told you that they like about you. If you have a low self-worth, this exercise may take you some time. That’s okay. Just keep the list handy and keep adding to it as you discover the things about you that are good. And, when you’re having one of those moments when you feel subpar, pull out the list and review it to remind yourself how great you truly are.
  • Stop your inner critic. You know the one. It’s the little voice inside your head that talks to you like you’re trash. Sometimes it’s so constant that you don’t even realize you’re hearing it. Pay attention to what you say to yourself. If you notice that you’re inner critic is about to rear its ugly head, make a conscious effort to stop it. Replace the negative statement with something positive. For instance, if it starts to tell you that you’ll never succeed, then replace the statement with one that that says that you will continue to work on things until you do succeed.
  • Do something challenging. When you feel down about yourself, take part in something that challenges you either physically or mentally. By completing something difficult, you can’t help but feel good about yourself. One example would be to register for a 5k run if you’ve never done one before. When you cross that finish line, you’ll feel like a million bucks. How’s that for a self-worth?
  • Quit comparing yourself to others. Nothing will rob you of your self-worth quicker than comparing yourself to someone that you believe is better than you. It’s like if they’re good then that has to mean you’re not good. Here’s the thing, you will always find someone who is better than you at certain things. But, the flip side of that is that there are some things that you are better at than other people. So, recognize the things that you’re good at and don’t try to be better than others. Instead, focus on trying to make yourself better.
  • Meditate. Not only will meditation help clear out all those negative, self-defeating thoughts, but it also boosts hormones that improve your mood and attitude. It increases your endorphins which give you a sense of happiness, raises your DHEA which alleviates depression and causes a remarkable improvement in your well-being and elevates your GABA which stabilizes your mood. Basically, it’s a natural anti-depressant. So, take a few minutes every day and just breathe.

Self-worth is called that because the only person that can give it to you is your ‘self. ‘ Isn’t it time you make that happen?
