We would all like to learn faster. Improved learning means job promotions, better grades, and an all-around more successful life. Despite our best efforts, sometimes focusing on the task at hand just isn’t enough. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to improve your learning. – Fuel up. We have all heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. When it comes to learning that is especially true. Having a good breakfast will fuel your brain and give you the energy you need to learn anything that is thrown your way.

– But not too much. While a good breakfast is important, too much food can be counterproductive to the learning process. A heavy meal will make you feel sluggish and your brain will have a hard time focusing. Try to feed yourself moderately throughout the day to maintain an even level of energy.

– Keep it fresh. There are three main ways of learning – visual, kinesthetic, and auditory. If you are struggling to learn new material using one of these approaches, try a different one. Sometimes all your brain needs is a different type of input for it to click.

– Be organized. Our brains hate clutter and have a hard time learning when they are distracted. Keep your workspace, and your life, in order and you will have a much easier time learning new material.

– Find motivation. If you’re not determined to learn something, you probably won’t. Have a strong reason for learning, such as good grades or financial reward, and you’ll find the process much easier. You can also enlist the help of other people to keep you motivated.

– Expect success. If you’re negative about your ability to learn, you can actually inhibit the very thing you’re trying to improve on. Keep a positive outlook for your best chance at success. You have certainly learned things successfully in the past, so call on those experiences to give you confidence going forward.

– Relax. If you’re feeling stressed about other parts of your life, you’re learning ability may be inhibited. Work to clear up those other pressures so your mind is freed to focus on the learning process. Surround yourself with people who are supportive of you and don’t put undue stress into your life.

– Break it up. The human brain does not focus well for long periods of time. For ideal learning, chop up your study sessions into shorter intervals. The ideal amount of time is different for everyone, so experiment to see what works best for you. Make your breaks at least 10 or 15 minutes to get your mind away from the task at hand. When you come back, you will have a fresh perspective and be ready for more learning.

– Clean up. Believe it or not, taking a bath or shower can soothe your mind and refresh your focus. The warm water relaxes your whole body and reinvigorates you. Next time you find yourself stuck on a particular piece of information, take a quick shower and come back to it. You just might find that that was all you needed.

– Meditate. Meditation has a powerful ability to reorganize your mind and get it working once again at full capacity. Life tends to get our ‘wires crossed’ and create a lack of focus. Starting a habit of daily meditation in somewhere quiet and peaceful will straighten out those wires and bring clarity back to your thinking.
