Do you want to make some changes in your life and you’re the type of person who likes to ‘do-it-yourself’? Are you ready to tackle some ‘problem areas’ and become a better you?

There’s nothing wrong with taking action into your own hands. It can actually be pretty satisfying to solve your own problems or resolve your own issues. The key to success is using the right processes to get you where you want to be.

Here’s five strategies that you can use no matter what issue you’re trying to overcome:

Meditate

When set out to change an area of your life, it’s easy to face a lot of frustration and anxiety. You’re leaving the comforts of the known and entering the abyss of the unknown and it can be terrifying, no matter how excited you are about the change.

Meditation offers a way to calm your fears while you go through the process. It gives you a calm and contentment amidst the chaos that you feel your life is in. It also clears your mind and opens it to the new behaviors you’re hoping to gain.

Educate

The more you know about and fully understand whatever seems to have a hold on you, the greater the likelihood that you’ll be able to change it. Learn whatever information you need to make your self-help venture a success.

For instance, if it’s weight loss you’re after, you’ll want to study nutrition and exercise. Or, if you’re trying to quit smoking, research the hurdles you may cross physically and mentally while quitting and see what techniques others used that proved successful. A little knowledge goes a long way.

Plan

No great feat is accomplished without a plan. It’s not enough to say that you want to quit drinking, for example. You have to decide how you’re going to get there.

In addition to having a step-by-step process for achieving your goal, you also have to plan for handling the speed bumps that are going to be in your path. Know ahead of time so they don’t trip you up unexpectedly.

And, don’t get caught up in creating the perfect plan because you’ll probably have to modify it as you go anyway. A plan is like the structure of a house. It’s meant to provide base support and stability. Don’t worry about the specifics because as you get more into it, you may realize that you want to make minor changes. Be flexible and it will come together.

Commit

If you’re going to set out to change something in your life, commit to it 100%. No saying you’ll try. To try is to give yourself room for failure. Don’t let failure be an option. Say you will! Pledge to meet your goal no matter what it takes.

Now, this isn’t to be confused with committing to perfection. You can’t expect to never screw up and make a mistake. That’s going to happen. But, if you’ve committed yourself to reaching your goal, you’ll move beyond the bad decision and keep moving in the right direction.

Coach

No matter how bad you want whatever it is you’re going after, sometimes it’s hard to keep pushing yourself. You start to let little things slide and before you know it, you’re right back where you started.

Treat yourself as if you’re your own coach. Don’t let yourself slack. Be accountable for your actions and put 100% into what you’re trying to do.

Find it hard to coach yourself? Enlist the help of a friend or supportive family member and let them do it for you. Sometimes it’s easier when someone else is pushing you to reach new limits and believing in you when you’re struggling.

You can do whatever you set out to do, and these five strategies will help. Now it’s time to show yourself what you’re made of!
