How to Build Solid Self-Confidence

Do you long for the day when you don’t feel self-conscious? Is it hard for you to imagine yourself walking into a room full of strangers, feeling good about yourself and not concerned about how you look?

Having a low self-image is no way to live life, especially when you can change it. And, you can. Just follow these three simple steps:

Focus on your positive qualities. It’s like the child who is constantly being told he’s bad. Pretty soon, he starts to believe it. The same is true when you consistently tell yourself that you’re just a pile of negative qualities walking around. It doesn’t matter how many great qualities you have, because you don’t pay attention to them anyway.

Think about your best friend. What’s the first thing that pops into your mind? It’s a positive quality, right? Yet, when you think of yourself, the first thoughts in your mind are of your imperfections. Maybe you don’t eat the way you should so you have a few extra pounds. Or, you’re a little too quick to get angry when things don’t go your way.

The people that you love and cherish have imperfections too, you just don’t focus on them. So, if you start to focus on your own great qualities, the same way you do theirs, it will help bolster your self-confidence because you actually feel like a worthwhile human being. You know, the same way that others see you.

Embrace your individuality. It’s hard to feel good about yourself when you’re constantly comparing yourself to other people. Sure, you may look okay, but certainly not as cute as your coworker. And, maybe you get out every day to do a little healthy walking, but your neighbor down the road runs six miles every day so, certainly, they must be better than you.

No two people are the same. And, isn’t that a great thing? When you think about the top three influencers in your life, isn’t it a different quality about each that is endearing? Maybe one is funny, another great with finances and yet the other a fantastic listener. How much fun would it be if they were all the same?

This same principle applies to you. Embrace the fact that you’re different than all the other people in this world. Einstein was different. But, wasn’t he still great? Yes, and you are too.

Has it ever occurred to you that you have some qualities that other people admire and wish they had? Maybe some have even told you that. They’ve actually said, “I wish I had your (insert great quality here).” Believe them when they say it.

Practice meditation. The more you understand yourself and are at peace with yourself, the more self-confident you will be. Meditation will not only help you accept yourself as you are, it will also help you develop the necessary skills to become who you desire to be.

Often, when a person is feeling depressed and not very confident, they have low melatonin and serotonin levels. This may manifest itself with problems sleeping, weight issues, fibromyalgia and more. Meditation boosts levels of both of these hormones, giving your body the chemicals it needs to combat issues that affect your total well-being.

When you meditate, the anxiety, anger, shame and depression just kind of melts away, session by session, layer by layer. And, it raises your threshold to these types of emotions so it takes more and more to get to you.

Increasing your self-confidence is easy, if you know how. And, now that you do, celebrate who you are. After all, your friends think you’re pretty great and how could they all be wrong?
