4 Goal Setting Methods That Go Beyond Ambition

You may have heard the story of how a gazelle and a lion wake up each day to outrun each other in order to survive. It is an inspiring story about how the prey and the predator start their day with just one primary objective – to run for their life. What do you wake up for? What is your one core reason that makes you put one step in front of the other each day?

Many of you already have the answer to those questions. You probably knew exactly what you wanted to do when you were five. However, there are others who are still trying to find that aim. Well the good news is there is no cookie cutter way to lead life. Not every scientist is hit by an apple on the head in order to achieve what Sir Isaac Newton accomplished. You get to choose your own fruit, your own path to greatness.

There are universal similarities that are common between a lion that does not go to sleep hungry, a gazelle that gets to live another day, and every goal achieving individual which are determination and the hunger for survival.

Following are four easy methods for setting goals which will not only help determine what you want in life, but will also help you to stay focused and yield productive results.

1. First Step towards Goal Setting Methods

Any successful journey starts with planning. You need to know where you are headed before you start walking. When setting your goals, keep a broader perspective of what you want to do. You might want five kids by the time you are forty, but clearly that’s not all that you can want from life. Likely, even when paving out your career goals, keep a clear and a well rounded idea about all that you want from life. Make a list of goals for education, living conditions, family, career etc.

2. Listing

Make a chart, breaking down your achievements into 10 year, 5 year, and even monthly plans. This will help you stay focused and work from each day to the next knowing that you are headed somewhere. Keep a checklist for smaller achievements, as well as when you cross major milestones, like graduating or getting your first job. You can also make a reversed or backward chart starting from where you eventually wish to see yourself and then moving down to all that you’d need to do in order to get there.

3. Facts Of Life

Success is about overcoming and moving on even if you fail at times. Know that you may not be able to land your first job a week after graduation, or have a baby by the end of 2014, but that you will eventually get there. Measure the success of your goal achievements by your personal performance and struggles and not by their outcome. And don’t forget to reward yourself for all the goals that you have achieved, no matter how big or small.

4. The All Important Me-ditation Time

Life is not about reaching a destination it’s about making the trip worthwhile. So give yourself some me time. Meditation is a great way of keeping your mind and body in sync. Meditation not only has great medical benefits, but it also helps you relax and stay focused. Like your body, your mind needs rest too, you can’t expect it to take the burden of all your worries and insecurities all day every day. Try meditating for at least 15 to 20 minutes every day, it will not only help relax your mind and body, but will also lead to productive results.

Most importantly, know that eventually you are the master of your life. A goal you made 3 years ago may not reflect your objectives today. Follow those plans only as long as you want to. The world might tell you that a new beginning ever day will not lead you anywhere, but you have a lifetime to prove them wrong.
