Goal Setting Strategies

Do you have a goal that you’d like to achieve? Maybe it’s one that has eluded you in the past but keeps returning, urging you to try again?

Goals are pretty easy to set. However, reaching them is another issue. That’s why it’s important to give yourself the best possible outcome by setting your goal in a way that all but insures your success!

Here’s 3 killer goal setting strategies that will have success in your near future:

Be Clear

In order to reach your goal, you have to be absolutely, 100% clear as to what your goal is. It’s not enough to want to lose weight, get a better job or find happiness. You have to know specifically what your goal means to you.

For instance, if your goal is to find happiness, ask yourself what that means. How do you define it? Is it feeling more self-confident? Maybe it involves accepting your past? What does it mean to you?

Not totally sure? Try meditation. Sitting in silence and allowing your mind to go to a deeper state will help you gain clarity and focus. It also enables what is called whole brain synchronization, which is when your left and right hemisphere work together in unison. This gives you double the brain power!

Make a Commitment

It’s not enough to say you want something. You have to commit to it. Make it a priority. Change it from something that you should do to something you will do.

A good way to cement your commitment? Write it down. It’s like signing a contract with yourself that you will meet certain terms.

Some people like to reinforce their commitment by telling family and friends. A word of caution on this one. It can work for or, unfortunately, against you.

Your loved ones, while they care for you and want to see you succeed, are still human. That means they’re capable of giving advice that isn’t always good. Listen to what they say, but formulate your own opinion as to whether it’s helpful or harmful. Use your common sense and research what they’ve told you when you can.

Set Mini Goals in Addition to a Finish Line

Part of what makes goal setting so fun and exciting is that it creates a reward at the end. It gives you something to look forward to. But, not only is the finish line important, it increases your chances of success if you set mini goals along the way.

Let’s say your goal is to lose fifty pounds. Sound daunting? But, not so much if you break it down into smaller increments. Set a goal to lose your first ten pounds. Once you achieve that goal, then set your next ten. Do this three more times and you’ve hit your final goal of fifty pounds. It’s much easier to swallow a ten pound weight loss than fifty, right?

Not only do mini goals make the process seem more doable, they also reaffirm your success more often than if you have just one goal at the end. When you’ve hit that first ten pound weight loss, for instance, it feels good. This positive feeling pushes you forward and motivates you to hit the next ten pound goal. It fuels your motivational fire.

Practice these three strategies and you’re on your way to not only achieving, but possibly surpassing any goal that you decide to set. Remember: know what you want, commit to getting it and break it down into smaller increments to limit overwhelm and enjoy constant positive reinforcement.

What are you waiting for? Your success awaits you!
