How to find balance in your life? 5 Proven Methods
The world seems to be spinning at an ever increasing rate and it is ever more difficult to strike a balance in our lives. Cellular phones and the internet have brought a whole new dimension to our lives but at a cost – it is harder and harder to ‘switch off’. If you are feeling like you are teetering on the edge, take heart – there is a way to get back in balance. Follow these 4 steps to finding balance in your life again:
Have a good look
The first, important step is to have a good look at how you are spending your time. This takes a little time but is an essential first step to bringing your life back into your control. Print out a blank calendar and grab a bunch of brightly colored markers. Highlight the time over a month that you are engaged in different activities. Your categories will be specific to you but may include – work outside the home, travel, time spent transporting kids to activities, exercise, time spent on computer/cell phone, household cleaning and maintenance… Make your list as detailed as you can.
Now, really look at it – are there any big surprises? Those few work emails you check every evening – does that really equate to 10 extra hours of work a week? How many hours are you spending driving the kids to activities after school? Could you join a carpool? How much time is left for you?
Under the hood.
Do you spend more time and money caring for your car’s mechanics than your own? When your life is out of balance it is easy for the essentials of healthy living to go out the window too.
Sleep – you need 6 to 7 good hours of sleep a night.
Exercise – it doesn’t have to be a huge time commitment but you need to be active in some way, most days. Walk the dog, or get off the train a stop or two early, drop into the local pool and swim 10 laps on the way home from work, grab the kids and a ball and take your dinner to the park.
Eat well – eating well does not have to take a lot of time. Instead of grabbing fast food again on the way home, how about some fresh bread rolls, chicken and salad? It only takes a few minutes and you can eat outside with the family.
Learn to meditate
It is easy to learn to meditate and it only takes minutes. The benefits you will feel in your life will astound you. Meditation can help to silence the never ending busy chatter in your mind, and by helping you find a calmer, more open part of yourself it can have a profound impact on your sense of fulfillment and contentment.
Along with many other benefits, meditation has been shown to enable the two hemispheres of your brain to work together. This is called ‘whole brain synchronization’. As a deep and profound way of learning to how to find balance in your life, helping your right hemisphere (the intuitive, creative, abstract side) to find balance with your left hemisphere (the mathematical, practical, logical side) could be revolutionary in your life.
Disconnect to reconnect
Make a pact with yourself to disconnect from all forms of negative ‘noise’ for certain chunks of time in your week. Even just an hour or two a day of no electronic devices can make a big difference – the kids may complain at first but you may be surprised how quickly they adapt and they will even start to remember how to amuse themselves the old-fashioned way. Disconnecting will give you the time to reconnect with the things that really do matter – your kids, family and the activities you care about. You may be surprised at the many hidden benefits of learning how to find balance in your life.
