How to Get Rid of Negative Thoughts – 5 Easy Ways
Negative thoughts affect the majority of people from time to time, but you need to be able to recognise when they are taking over and affecting the way in which you interact with the people around you. Learning some techniques to deal with the negative thoughts and get rid of them is extremely important, especially in today’s modern, fast-paced world.
Exercise as stress relief
Exercise is a great form of stress relief because it involves a physical activity that can act as a release for the tension you are feeling. Getting rid of stress and tension can be extremely beneficial in reducing the negative thoughts you are experiencing. Exercise also causes the body to produce endorphins, which are responsible for the feeling called “runner’s high”. This gives a feeling of well-being and promotes positive thinking.
Try meditating to promote calm
Meditation is extremely useful to encourage a sense of well-being and positivity. It encourages the production of endorphins, so has some of the same benefits as exercise. Combining these two methods of stress relief will help you to reduce the instances of negative thoughts.
Meditation also encourages the production of the chemical DHEA, which improves your sense of well-being and can help to combat the symptoms of depression. Depression can lead to negative thoughts and vice versa, so it is best to try and work on reducing the negative thoughts before they turn into a bigger issue.
A third chemical that is boosted by meditation is GABA, which helps to stabilise your mood. A large number of mental disorders are thought to be due to low levels of GABA in the body. Serotonin levels may also be increased, which can help to restore your moods and reduce negative thoughts.
Try to think positively
This involves changing the way in which you look at a situation, and trying to see the positive aspects first. This will take practice and you may need to get some help from the people around you at first. Nothing is completely negative, so try to focus on the positive things about the situation. Ask other people to help you, as they may be able to see things that you have disregarded.
Breathe deeply, and focus
Whenever you feel that the negative thoughts are beginning to take over, close your eyes and breathe deeply. Concentrate only on your breathing and push all other thoughts out of your mind. Don’t worry about anything that is going on around you, as that will lead to increased stress levels and even more negative thoughts than you already had. Repeat this process several times a day, for about five minutes each time, and you will begin to notice a difference in your pattern of thinking.
Make sure you look after yourself
If you are feeling even slightly run down, then it will be easier for the negative thoughts to take over and affect the way you behave to the people around you. Ensure that you are getting enough sleep and that you are eating properly. Look after your body properly and you will find it easier to control the negative thoughts and reduce their frequency. Problems such as negative thinking, depression and anxiety are amplified when you are experiencing higher levels of stress than usual, and this makes it more likely that you are not taking sufficient care of your body.
Negative thoughts can be reduced by following these tips, but to be most effective, you will need to do these activities on a regular basis. Looking at ways to reduce the stress levels in your life will also be extremely beneficial.
