Stop Panic Attacks Naturally

Do you sometimes feel anxious for no reason at all? Does your heart start to flutter, your body start to sweat and you become nervous that a panic attack is on the horizon?

Suffering from panic attacks is scary. Some people only have one or two attacks in their lifetime, but others have them more often. Either way, they affect quality of life and stopping them is a priority. But how?

What is a panic attack?

The first step to stopping a panic attack is to know and understand exactly what it is. According to the Mayo Clinic, “a panic attack is a sudden episode of intense fear that triggers severe physical reactions when there is no real danger or apparent cause.”

What type of physical reactions are triggered? They are rapid heart rate, sweating, nausea, headache and dizziness, to name a few. It’s the same response your body would undergo if faced with a valid threat, such as a physical assault or any type of dangerous situation.

What causes them? No one seems to know for sure as this is the baffling part of panic attacks. It may be genetics or it could also be your body’s reaction to stress. What experts have found is that your body goes into fight-or-flight mode when no true threat against your welfare exists.

Can a panic attack kill you?

Luckily, no. You cannot die from a panic attack. However, it certainly feels like it to the person experiencing the fear and physical effects. And, just because death isn’t a possible outcome, that doesn’t mean that they aren’t debilitating in their own way.

A person who suffers from panic attacks may avoid social situations for fear of having an attack in front of other people. They may become depressed thinking there is no hope for their situation. They may suffer from financial problems if it interferes with their ability to work. Some people turn to alcohol or drugs for relief. Some are more desperate and turn to suicide.

With treatment, however, most people can function just fine on a day to day basis. Some people rely on medication or psychotherapy to relieve their symptoms. But, what can you do to alleviate an attack immediately and naturally?

Meditation is key

Meditation helps on many levels – physical, spiritual and psychological. It allows you to become aware of your mind and calm it when you start to feel the onset of fear. How?

When you’re not in a meditative state, stress, anxiety and depression all have a way of rearing their ugly heads. However, when you’re able to relax your mind and body, your fears and phobias start to melt away. You feel more open and connected to other people. And, when you’re in a deep level of meditation, your system is open to renewal, healing and rejuvenation.

Here’s a meditation exercise that will calm your body and help relieve you of panic attacks. Sit in a quiet location and just focus on your breathing. Pay attention to your breathe as it enters and leaves your body.

You may feel your mind begin to wander to other thoughts beyond your breathing when you first start doing this exercise. That’s natural. Just return it to your breathing when you’re aware that it’s happened.

Panic attacks are real and they’re scary. But, knowing and understanding what they are is the first step to freeing yourself from them. And now you have a natural and effective way of dealing with one, should it occur. So, go out there and live life, fear and panic free!
