how to live life in the moment

It seems our entire culture is trying to pull us out of the moment we are living in. Think about it – wherever you are, there are distractions vying for your attention that will pull you away from the present time and place. It could be a high tech device such as your smart phone, or something simple like the radio. No matter what it is, these ever present distractions take away from some of the most valuable moments and experiences in life. Don’t let your days go by while you are mentally somewhere off in the distance. Think about these six tips and you will find yourself living life in the moment more than ever before.

– Turn Off Your Phone. Yes, you could get an email at any time. Trust me; it will still be there when you check it later. I promise. Pick logical times to turn your phone all the way off and put it away. A good example is when you are attending an event that your child is participating in. Even though you are in the stands at the game, are you really there if you check your phone every two minutes? I don’t think so. Help yourself engage in the experience and memories by unplugging for an hour or two.

– Stop Planning Everything. In the modern age, it seems that everything we do is planned weeks (or months) in advance. While this is necessary in some cases, it is not always beneficial. Some of the most exciting and memorable moments in life come when you least expect them. If your whole life is scheduled, when can those moments occur? Leave holes in your schedule that can be filled at the last minute – you just might be surprised at what can happen.

– Don’t Multitask. Ever feel like you are doing three things at once, but not really getting anything done? Me too. To get the most out of yourself, and life, try to do just one thing at a time. If you are working, put away the distractions and do your work. The quality will improve and it will get done quicker. If you are having leisure time with family or friends, put work thoughts away and immerse yourself in the fun. You will have a better time, and be more refreshed when it comes time to get back to work.

– Simple Things. We have so many incredible technologies available to us these days, it seems like we have lost track of some of the most satisfying, and simple, activities. These are also the things that keep us living life in the moment and feeling good about ourselves. Take your dog for a long walk. Have a chat with a good friend while the TV is off and the phones are put away. Sit at the beach or in a park and read a book. All of these examples will slow life down a bit and bring you right back to a pleasant reality.

– Meditate. What better way to live life in the present than to take time in quiet thought and relaxation? Meditation is famous for clearing your brain and ‘cleaning up’ your thoughts. Consider this – meditation has been proven to decrease cortisol levels in the body, which is a hormone that accelerates the aging process. By meditating, you will be helping yourself to stay within the moment both mentally AND physically. You will combining many attributes of the other tips in this article into one when you spend time in meditation. Even if you have never tried it, consider meditation as a great option to quiet your brain and bring you back to living your life in the present moment.
