Feel like a cannon with the fuse almost gone? Or, maybe you’re more of a pressure cooker about ready to explode?

Life is full of stressors, some good and some bad. Maybe you’re preparing for a wedding or just gave birth to your first child. While they may be changes that add a little chaos to your world, they’re easier to handle because they’re so positive in nature.

But, what happens when the things causing you anxiety and frustration aren’t so good? Maybe you’re going through a hectic time at work or dealing with the sickness of a loved one. These stressors have a way of zapping your energy or robbing you of your health, if you’re not careful.

Your body and mind can’t take tremendous amounts of stress for extended periods of time without negative consequences. You have to give both a break every now and again to rejuvenate and relax. While it may not be in your cards to take a much needed vacation, there are still things you can do to ease the angst.

So, how do you de-stress quickly and easily? Follow these three simple steps:

Step #1 – Breathe

I know what you’re thinking. You breathe all day every day and you’re still stressed, right? That isn’t the kind of breathing I’m referencing.

When I say breathe, I mean deep breathe, as in meditation. Meditation is a great way to clear your mind and remove all the negative thoughts that are clouding your ability to think clearly. It improves your problem solving and information processing skills, both of which are necessary in stressful situations.

In addition, meditation boosts many hormones that affect your overall well-being. It increases your DHEA which alleviates depression, your GABA which stabilizes your mood and your melatonin which helps you sleep better.

Take a few minutes daily to sit quietly and focus on your breathing. Breathe in and out and let all of the stress leave your body. You’ll feel renewed and energized immediately.

Step #2 – Change Your Perception

If you feel like life is outside of your control and you’re just a helpless victim, you’re going to feel stressed. However, the reality is that very few things are beyond your control. You almost always have the option to do something that changes your circumstances.

Sometimes though, you can find yourself in a situation where there is nothing you can do to change it. For instance, if you’re diagnosed with an fatal illness, there’s not much you can do about it. However, instead of getting all stressed, which isn’t going to help at all, try focusing on the positives in your world. Be thankful for the great family and friends you have to help you such a trying time.

Step #3 – Stay in the Moment

This is huge when it comes to de-stressing because most stress comes from either reliving the past or worrying about the future. However, if you just stay in the present, life is simpler and easier to handle. It’s because the present is the only thing you have any control over.

When you start to feel like you’re consumed by yesterday or tomorrow, direct your thoughts back to where you are right now. Focus on what you’re doing and put all your attention into that. You’ll find not only less stress but greater satisfaction because you were fully engaged in your life.

Stress is a necessary evil in life. However, that doesn’t mean that you have to allow it to control your world. Take the time to de-stress daily and you’ll be happier, healthier and more able to deal with whatever comes your way.
