4 Benefits of Being Non-Judgmental
Do you jump to conclusions rather easily? Is your mind usually made up before you hear all the facts, so you usually don’t even listen to them?
If you answered yes to either of these questions, you may be more judgmental than you realize. While no one necessarily likes to admit that they evaluate and label others, sometimes it happens so subconsciously that you don’t even know you’re doing it.
Because judgments are ingrained so deeply in your subconscious, it can be hard to break the habit of immediately creating a label or generalization toward a person or situation. However, it is possible. And, it is preferred because being a non-judgmental person has many benefits.
1. It opens yourself to new experiences
How many times have you stopped yourself from trying something new because you ‘knew’ you wouldn’t like it? If you’re like most people, the answer is probably a lot. However, if you set your judgment aside and try something new, you may find a pleasurable, exciting experience that enriches your life.
Don’t not try something just because someone else doesn’t like it. Everyone has unique interests. Find out what yours are on your own.
2. You have higher quality friendships
It’s tough to be friends with someone who is always judging you. You feel like you’re under the microscope with everything you do. This may cause you to only share information that you feel is ‘safe’ for discussion, often omitting personal and important parts of your life.
If, however, you’re the type of friend who is non-judgmental, you tend to have higher quality relationships. Your friends know they can come to that you with personal information because you won’t ridicule them for your actions or judge them for their not-so-good decisions.
They share more intimate life details because you’ve created a safe environment for them to do so. This means closer, higher quality friendships.
3. You achieve greater spirituality
When you free yourself from judging, you create a spirituality that is freeing. It’s open to give and receive love on so many different levels. You feel calm and peace because you’re not assigning labels or creating positives and negatives. Everything is seen for its own inherent beauty.
4. You are a happier person
When others are busy labeling things good, bad, right and wrong, you’re just accepting them for what they are. And, when you’re able to no longer judge things, you achieve a higher level of happiness because you’re not weighted down by trying to figure out the complexities of people and situations. They are what they are. Nothing more. Nothing less.
And, when you’re able to no longer label, you develop a stronger shield or thicker skin against those that live to label and judge. You are more resilient against getting sucked in to their negative thought patterns and behaviors.
How Do You Become Non-Judgmental?
One great way is to meditate. Meditation changes your brainwaves from beta to theta. What does this mean in layman terms?
When you’re using beta brainwaves, which people in non-meditative states generally do, you are more susceptible to being anxious, stressed and depressed. With all of these negative emotions in your body, it’s easy to cast a negative judgment on everything around you.
However, when your body switches to theta brainwaves, you feel more open and connected to other people. You are less judgmental of them, and have increased inspiration and motivation. Life becomes more positive.
How can you start to become non-judgmental today? Try this simple breathing exercise. Find a nice, quiet place where you can sit and be alone. Close your eyes and focus only on your breathing. Let all of your worries and cares slip away.
Feel your breath as it enters your body and again when it exits it. If you notice your thoughts returning to whatever is on your mind, simply direct them back to your breathing.
By spending a few minutes every day performing this one little action, you’ll be on your way to increased happiness, higher quality friendships and a new level of spirituality. That is what life’s about, isn’t it?
