Six of the Best Ways to Motivate Yourself for Higher Achievement

best ways to motivate yourself

Among the many things that are great about being a kid is the fact that there is always someone there to push you. In school, teachers keep you on task. On a sports team, the coach is there to get after you if your effort starts to lag. Your parents likely had chores for you to do that were mandatory before playtime was allowed. As an adult, those ‘motivators’ disappear. You become your own person – free to spend your time as you wish. This is both a blessing and a curse. The ability to choose your own path is great, but it can be easy to get distracted and be unproductive. Below I have provided six tips that can keep you focused, on task, and highly productive.

– Don’t Settle. One of the easiest ways to lose motivation is to do the same thing over and over again. Anything, no matter what it is, gets boring eventually. By continually challenging yourself to find new adventures, your mind will stay engaged in what you are doing, and the motivation will come naturally.

– Record Your Progress. Whatever it is you are trying to stay motivated for, try breaking it down into smaller components and keep track of your progress toward those ‘mini-goals’. Don’t try to climb the whole mountain at once – rather be satisfied with accomplishing smaller tasks along the way. You will find yourself more inclined to keep going, and will probably reach the top before you know it.

– Just Get Started. Often, the hardest part of any project or goal is simply thinking about it. To conquer that hurdle, just jump right into the middle of it. For example, if you are seeking motivation to start exercising, just run out the door and go for a jog. Don’t plan the route you will run, how far, etc. Just start running. Before your mind catches up you will be a few minutes into it and have no problem continuing on.

– Choose Friends Wisely. Human beings are social creatures, and we tend to adapt to the habits of those around us. If you associate yourself with lazy, unmotivated people, you will quickly find yourself mimicking those habits. Pick friends and family to spend time with that share your desire for activity and accomplishment. Allow them to help pull you through days when you just don’t feel like doing anything, and you can return the favor for them.

– De-clutter. One of the great inhibitors to productivity is a messy work or living space. Having a messy desk, for example, gives the brain a feeling that there is more work to be done than there really is. That feeling can be overwhelming and lead you toward just giving up instead of tackling your challenges. Make it a point to keep the most used areas of your house and office clean and organized. It may seem like a small thing, but it can make a huge difference in the workings of your brain.

– Meditate. In some ways, the idea of meditating to stay motivated can be related to the previous point on de-cluttering your work spaces. Meditation is a powerful way of de-cluttering your mind and allowing it to work at its full capacity. Spending time in quiet meditation will pull away those distractions and stresses that come with everyday life. Your brain will emerge relaxed, energized, and ready to take on new challenges. Sometimes, the best way to motivate yourself is to step back and find your balance and peace. A consistent habit of meditation may be just the thing to keep your motor running smoothly and your motivation at its highest.
