how do you find your purpose in life

One of the most common human traits is to begin to look for a purpose in our lives as we age. In our younger years we tend to just go with the flow, doing whatever we are told or expected to do. As time passes, however, we start to look for a stronger meaning in our days. What is it we are supposed to accomplish? Is it the same for everyone? If you are wondering how you find your purpose in life, you are not alone. This is a common question, with a different answer for everyone. The goal of this article is to give you some tools for discovering a purpose for your own life. Give each point some careful consideration and try to keep an open mind as to what the ultimate answer might be.

– Losing Track of Time. One great way to determine what your purpose is in life is to discover activities that cause you to forget about the clock. For most of us, we spend the majority of our work day staring at the clock trying to find ways to make it speed up. That is not a description of someone who has found their purpose. If there is a specific activity you engage in that consistently has you saying ‘where did the time go?’, that may very well be your purpose in life. Obviously, that activity captures your attention enough to make you forget about time and focus your energy completely on the task.

– Telling Stories. We can get a great glimpse into what things we are most proud of when we examine the stories we tell in social situations. Next time you are at a party or other social event, keep track of the things you wind up telling other people about. Those moments can help you to discover your purpose in life. If something is prominent enough in your mind to start up a conversation about it, you must feeling pretty strongly about the topic.

– National Platform. This exercise works similarly to the previous point. Imagine yourself on national television with an open mic and one minute to deliver any message you wish to the entire country. What would you talk about? What causes or topics are important enough to you that you would spend this one minute to get the word out about them? Play this scenario out in your mind and determine what specific thing you would choose to promote. Very likely, that is your answer to what your true purpose is in life.

– Look Back to See Ahead. Take some time to review your life to this point and analyze what you would do different. Try not to do this from a regretful standpoint – just take an objective look at decisions you have made and places where you could have spent more time on something you care deeply about. Why didn’t you? By reviewing these decisions in your past you are more likely to make a different decision next time around. Maybe last time you chose to make more money over a job that would have been more fulfilling. If that is something you would go back and change, just knowing that will help you make a different decision the next time an opportunity presents itself.

– Meditate. It is nearly impossible to determine a true purpose in life if we never slow down and let our brains focus and relax. The modern pace of life is such that most people never get a chance to quiet their stream of consciousness and just ‘be’ for a few minutes. Spending a little time in quiet meditation each day is a great way to turn down the noise in your head and find what really makes you feel alive. Finding your purpose in life may be as simple as just slowing down, meditating, and letting the realizations come to you naturally.
