Five Simple Points on How to Trust Yourself
When it comes to deciding whether or not to trust other people, most of us have a pretty clear checklist in our minds. Has this person done anything in the past to prove their trustworthiness? Are they qualified enough for me to trust them with this project/job? Do other people trust them? These are very likely some of the questions you would ask yourself when deciding if you trust someone. But what about trusting yourself? Having trust, and belief, in yourself is maybe more important than trusting others. Read through this article to discover the top five reasons you have to believe in yourself.
– Past Success. You have certainly succeeded at something in your life. Even if you have had more bad times than good, somewhere along the way things went exactly as you hoped and planned that they would. Call on those good feelings. Look back and think about what led up to your success, and try to replicate those steps. Just as you can get used to failing, you can get used to succeeding as well. Focus in on your past victories and use them to build trust in your abilities moving forward.
– Vote of Confidence. Even though the trust of yourself needs to come from within, it can be a big boost to hear it from someone else. It doesn’t need to be an impartial person, either. Talk to you parents, a sibling, a close friend, or anyone else with a high opinion of you. Ask them to reinforce why they believe in you, and why you should believe in yourself. Those external affirmations will ring loudly in your head at moments when doubt starts to creep in. You might also want to consider writing them down and keeping them somewhere safe for review when you need a confidence boost.
– Slow and Steady. Let’s say you want to start your own business, but don’t quite trust yourself enough to jump in with both feet. Start slow and build up some confidence. Offer your services on a part time basis and try to satisfy one client at a time. As time passes and your satisfied client list grows, so will the trust you have in yourself. This method will take the pressure off of the situation and free you up to do what you do best. When the time comes to make the leap and chase your dream, you will be buoyed by the confidence of your smaller successes.
– Look Inward. Many of our doubts come from fear that others will judge our failures. A big step toward total trust in yourself can come from letting go of any concern about what others are thinking. You will never control the thoughts and actions of other people – and spending time and energy worrying about that is a waste. To truly trust yourself means to not be concerned with other peoples doubt and go ahead on your path. An attitude adjustment like this takes time, but it will be worth it in the end. The freedom found in trusting yourself is a huge boost toward success and accomplishment.
– Meditate. This goes hand in hand with the previous point. Deep meditation is a great way to look inside and find your confidence. Meditation cuts out the ‘noise’ of daily life and allows you to focus on yourself and what really makes you go. Your brain will feel refreshed and focused. The clarity you gain from consistent meditation gives you a perspective from ‘outside’ your brain – and is a great way to see how many reasons you have to trust yourself.
