Anxiety is one of the most unpleasant feelings that a person can experience. If you are anxious about something, it becomes hard to focus on the life going on around you, and you can even become physically ill. There are countless different causes on anxiety; anything from relationships to work to health problems can lead to overwhelming anxiety. Don’t despair, however. There are a number of steps you can take to gain control over your anxious feelings. The following are six of the best methods –

– Commit to the Process. If you refuse to acknowledge anxiety as a problem, it will continue to be one. Don’t think there is something wrong with you – countless people struggle with anxiety each and every day. If you are able to understand that anxiety is a condition from which you can improve, you are already ahead of the game. With that understanding in place, commit yourself 100% to beating anxiety once and for all.

– Get Moving. Exercise helps your body and mind in ways that science may not yet fully understand. Is it a coincidence that anxiety has gone up as our lifestyles have become more sedentary? I doubt it. When you are exercising regularly, you feel better about yourself as a whole, as more positive about the future. Rather than being anxious about things to come, you are optimistic instead. Make an aggressive, but realistic, exercise schedule and do your best to stick to it.

– Don’t Compound the Problem. Adding small anxieties to your life unnecessarily will contribute negatively to your overall anxious state. If you are worried about an upcoming job review, don’t add to the stress by watching scary movies or going out drinking. Engage in activities that soothe and calm you. While this won’t eliminate the concern over your job review, it will give your brain a break from the worry while enjoying something pleasant. That alone may be enough to take the edge off of your anxiety and get things back in perspective.

– Only Get One Life. That may seem like a negative way to think, but it is actually freeing. Next time you feel overwhelmed with anxiety, stop and think about your life for a minute. This is the only one you get, and there is no going back. Use that frame of reference to think about what it is in your life that’s really important. Most likely, whatever you have been anxious about will not seem so daunting as compared to the big picture of life.

– Take it Head On. If you are anxious about a tangible thing, like flying, try meeting your fears face to face. Rather than dread the day you have to go to the airport and take a flight for business, schedule a short little commuter flight for this weekend. You will take the fear out of the future and bring it right into your life. This will require that you confront the fear, deal with it, and move on from it. After you take your weekend ‘practice’ flight, much of the anxiety will have been washed away and you can relax in advance of your business trip.

– Meditate. Anxiety feeds on itself, and your brain can easily run out of control if you let it. A great way to break the chain is to take time each day to spend in meditation. The quiet solace of meditating will provide relief from the string of anxious thoughts you have been experiencing, and allow rationality to work its way back in. Your brain will emerge refreshed, relaxed, and ready to face whatever life has in store.
