Creative thinking can help you find unique ways to solve problems and increase your quality of life in several different ways. Creativity is linked to the right hemisphere of your brain and is responsible for a wide variety of processes like art, music and memory. Techniques for creative thinking can be used to improve these and several other aspects of your mental state of being. If you are searching for ways to tap into your own mental Matisse, follow these tips.

1. Improvisation

This is where you use a creative process without any practice or preparation. Professional musicians and actors use improvisation to discover new ways to present an idea or creation and you can use it to increase your own creative thinking skills as well. A simple way to practice improvisation is to get together with a group of friends and perform short, two-minute skits without preparation.

It works like this: everyone should write down a situation between two people, like a couple on a first date or a policeman pulling over a driver. Place all of the ideas into a hat and then each person will pair up with a partner. Each set of partners will draw one situation and then create a funny scene that lasts for a maximum of two minutes.

With no amount of time to prepare for each scene, the two individuals will need to think quickly and creatively to come up with a funny narrative.

2. Meditation

Meditation is a safe and effective way to stimulate your nervous system and enhance your cognitive abilities. This process helps you move between different brainwaves more efficiently and tap into beneficial Alpha and Theta brainwave patterns.

Alpha brainwaves tap into your natural learning processes and help you learn, memorize and recall information. When you begin meditation, you will discover positive changes in these aspects of your mental functions.

Theta brainwaves help you create images, solve problems and connect with other individuals. You will become more motivated and inspired when you tap into these patterns.

3. Aleatory Techniques

Similar to improvisation, aleatory techniques tap into random processes to help you create ideas. These techniques are most commonly used to create art. Flipping a coin and rolling dice to make decisions regarding your creation adds an element of chance and uncertainty to the task. This forces you to recruit your creative brain functions to find a way to make something new. For example, if you are writing a poem, roll a pair of dice to decide how many syllables to include in each line.

4. Painting

Painting is a powerful method for tapping into your creative mind. When you are faced with a problem or trying to sort out your emotions, consider picking up a paintbrush and allowing yourself to “let it all out” on a canvas. There should be no rules and the more spontaneous your creation, the better. Practice different strokes and colors as you imagine the problem or emotions you are trying to deal with. By the time you are finished, you will find yourself more relaxed and clear-headed.

5. Learn a Musical Instrument

This is another excellent way to use the creative aspects of your mind. When you learn the basics of the guitar, piano or any other musical instrument, you can eventually practice composing your own pieces. Music is an effective method for self-expression that has been used for thousands of years and it is sure to help you tap into your inner creativity.

When it comes to techniques for creative thinking, your options are endless. The creative process is about discovering new ideas and methods for approaching a problem or situation and if you practice the skills we have listed here, you may begin looking at your life from a completely new (and creative!) perspective.
