increase emotional intelligence

Although many people disagree about what emotional intelligence specifically is, in general it is someone’s ability to evaluate, identify and control your emotions so that you better understand the emotions of others around you. The term of emotional intelligence appeared in the 1980’s and became popular because of Daniel Goleman’s book, “Emotional Intelligence”.

When you have a high level of emotional intelligence you will benefit from it. Some people even consider this to be of more importance than having a high intellectual intelligence, but others focus more on a balance between the two. For those who feel they are lacking emotional intelligence, it is possible to learn how to increase emotional intelligence.

1. Understand How Important Emotional Intelligence Is

You will be able to live a happier life if you have a high level of emotional intelligence. You will have an easier time communicating with others and understanding them, you’ll be able to act calmly and rationally when difficult situations arise and you could even experience better job opportunities and relationships.

2. Learn Your Stress Triggers

Life is full of stressful situations, so when you learn what triggers stress for you and how to handle it, you’ll be able to increase emotional intelligence in yourself. Dealing with your stress appropriately instead of letting it control you will have you living a much easier, happier life.

3. Remain Open-Minded and Agreeable

These two things go right along with each other when you are talking about emotional intelligence. Being open to new ideas can also increase emotional intelligence, while being narrow minded can keep your levels low. You’ll also have an easier time handling conflicts in a self-assured and calm manner.

4. Show Empathy and Be Outgoing

When you can understand others and take an interest in what is going on in their lives, you are taking away your focus on yourself. It will increase your communication abilities with others, giving you the opportunity to enjoy deeper and more satisfying relationships.

5. Be Aware of Your Actions

When you are being rational, you will be showing more emotional intelligence, as well. Understanding a situation is not the same as being able to take rational action towards it. Being aware of a situation is your ability you have to analyze it and how to act upon it in a positive way. Many people can see what is wrong, but then they don’t necessarily know how to act on it accordingly.

6. Be Aware of Yourself

When you are paying attention to yourself and your surroundings in a positive manner, you will better know what to expect from others around you. You’ll be able to understand why you act in certain ways and maybe change your reactions to think in a more positive light. Some people believe that mediation is a great way to be more aware of yourself. Clearing your mind of other distractions around you and resting your mind can help you to peacefully focus on your inner self.

7. Practice Your Communication Skills

When your level of emotional intelligence goes up, you’ll find that your communication skills will do so, as well. It is important to not only pay attention to your verbal communication but to your body language, too. You can learn a lot about yourself, and other people, by studying body language and emotions.

8. Be Optimistic

When you are optimistic, you tend to leave a happier life overall. It is easier to see the good in people and situations more easily when you are optimistic, plus it can give you a more open mind. Having a negative outlook on things will encourage you to stay wrapped up in yourself and your situation and only focusing on the wrong that happens.

When you practice these steps to increase emotional intelligence, you will find that overall you will lead a much happier, more fulfilled life with last and meaningful relationships.
