Do you start out excited about reaching a goal, but find that within a day, a week, or one month you’re talking yourself out of achieving it? Want easy ways to keep your motivation going strong?

That’s the funny thing about motivation. It’s a fire that burns out rather quickly. Even when you think you have enough wood and gasoline to keep it going strong, it’s just a matter of time and you’re sitting in the dark wondering what went wrong.

Here are five tips to find, and keep, your fire stoked so that you can reach any goal that has eluded you, until now:

Know your ‘why’ intimately. The more you understand why something is important to you, the greater your probability of success. If you want to lose weight to ‘feel better’, what does that mean to you specifically? Is it being able to perform daily activities without being winded or does it mean getting off blood pressure or cholesterol medications?

Create a goal board. Keeping your goal in front of your face helps keep you excited as you make changes necessary to reach your goals. For instance, if you’re saving to buy a new car, wouldn’t it motivate you even more to have the car sitting in your driveway day in and day out? The same process occurs when you use pictures to create a goal board. They represent your goal and keep it in your face. Place it somewhere you’ll see it often to stay excited and motivated.

Enlist family and friends. When your motivation starts to falter, sometimes it’s best to call in reinforcement. No one is going to help you more than family and friends that love you and want to see you reach your goals. Create a network of people you can call when you feel weak. Or, enlist them in efforts that will get you closer to your goal. For example, if your goal is to exercise thirty minutes a day, find a friend to take zumba classes with. Or, ask a family member to go for a walk with you. Having someone by your side during the process makes it much more enjoyable. And, the more fun you have in the process, the greater the likelihood that you’ll achieve your goal.

Meditate. It’s easy to get caught up in doing things you think you should do to reach your goal and lose sight of yourself in the meantime. If you’re so focused on doing A, B and C that you forget to live your life, the whole process becomes mundane and lifeless. Meditating keeps you grounded. It allows you to stay in touch with yourself and helps you function on a higher level. It helps you make your dreams a reality by calming your fears, enhancing your problem-solving skills and refreshing your system.

Surround yourself with others who’ve achieved similar goals. Have you ever had a conversation with someone who is passionate about the same thing you are and walk away with a renewed motivation? It’s like they stoked your fire and suddenly you feel the heat again? By keeping people like this close, you’ll feed off their passion when yours starts to lag. Even if you don’t know someone personally, you can follow someone famous who has the ability to motivate and inspire you. Read about them. Learn from them.

Motivation takes constant care and attention. It’s like brushing your teeth. You can’t do it just once and expect your teeth to be okay forever. If you want the best results, you have to do it constantly and consistently. Now put these tips to work and get motivated!
